Dr Martin Luther King once said, “I have a dream”. Well, so do I. In my dream, I envision our club sprouting into several more clubs to create an area with 4 or 5 clubs. I see this developing into a district with several areas. I picture speech competitions between clubs and areas that evolve top-rate speakers who can compete at the International level. I foresee an opportunity for Italian speech enthusiasts to stand before large and varied groups of like-minded toastmasters in many different venues around Italy willing to listen with a kind ear, evaluate with an astute mind and encourage with a generous heart. But alas, I thought this was only a dream… until Saturday April 17th, when I got a peek at our possible future and now… I am inspired.
Laura Tavola, Laura Limitone and I got up with the roosters that fateful Saturday morning and embarked on, what became for us, a thoroughly satisfying and motivating journey. We attended the Division E Annual Conference held in the Four Points by Sheraton in Zurich, Switzerland. This flawlessly organized event (what else would you expect from the Swiss) welcomed members from clubs from all over Switzerland to come together and learn from each other through workshops and speech competitions.
I was astounded by the sheer number of participants and encouraged by the enthusiasm, passion and keenness these Toastmasters displayed. When we arrived, we where warmly welcomed, briefed on the days activities and given our name tags. One by one, almost all in attendance approached us with a friendly smile, introduced themselves and expressed their appreciation that we would travel so far to be a part of their conference. I immediately felt at ease… welcome… home.
We witnessed top rate speakers give phenomenal speeches with textbook technique clearly honed through hours of practice. But, what really struck me was the joy that oozed from these speakers as they shared their thoughts through words and completely engaged the audience. We heard about the importance of allowing trust to win over fear, using anger as an ally, a new, positive way of looking at the word “Mafia”, how soup made a profound difference in someone’s life and the power of words, themes of some really great speeches that I hope we can share with all of you in an upcoming meeting once we receive the DVD.
After the speech competition, we had the opportunity to witness an equally articulate group judged on their skills in evaluating a speech. All contestants really showed how powerful an evaluation can be to encourage, give confidence, and empower a speaker to move forward and improve.
Following a short lunch and social networking, we all settled into the afternoon workshops. I attended the workshop by Jack Vincent about “Selling in a Brave new World” and AK Bullus on what to do when props go wrong in your presentations. Jack showed us how much more worthwhile it is to truly listen to our clients and not just show them how “sexy” our product/service can be and AK involved us all in coming up with solutions to real disasters that occur with props when we do a presentation. Both were very interesting, involved the audience and left me with many new ideas to think about.
We left the conference regretting only one thing… that we didn’t sign up for the dinner and perhaps stay the night so that we could have more time with these wonderful people. I made many new friends and established some great contacts for potential future business collaboration. We drove home exuding an after-glow of satisfaction after having a taste of what it means to be a part of such a large, well organized, enthusiastic, and passionate group.
As I come back to our club, I feel much more like a part of a much larger organism and am determined to use the tools Toastmasters International gives us to grow together with all of you, the Italian Toastmasters: a group that has already proven to be great and that, I am convinced, has the potential to take its place in the International arena to produce world-class speakers.
I highly encourage all of you to participate in the upcoming Fall conference (date to-be-announced). I know I’ll be there and am happy to have any and all of you join me. I promise you, you won’t come back the same.

Sono qui che cerco le parole per descrivere l’esperienza che ho vissuto pochi giorni fa, il 17 aprile, insieme ad altri due fantastici TM, Laura Tavola ed Andy Barbiero! Ma cominciamo per gradi…

Qualche settimana fa abbiamo ricevuto l’invito da parte della Division E a partecipare, come ospiti, alla loro Contest Conference a Zurigo! Con entusiasmo decido immediatamente che voglio far parte di quella “spedizione”! Qualche giorno prima dell’evento, con mia immensa sorpresa, mi viene anche richiesto di essere uno dei 6 giudici che dovranno decretare il vincitore sia dell’Intenational Speech Contest che dell’Evaluation Contest. Un immenso onore, ed accetto la sfida con grande entusiasmo.

Il giorno della Conferenza partiamo di buon’ora ed arriviamo a Zurigo in tempo per la registrazione ed il briefing dei giudici. L’atmosfera è frizzante e tutti sono molto cordiali. Entriamo nella sala dove si terranno i Contest ed i workshop e veniamo anche presentati come “Italian Delegation” ed accolti da un calorosissimo applauso.
Assistiamo prima di tutto ad uno Speech di Helen Hermens, il District Governor del District 59. un discorso molto interessante e molto motivante.
Poi finalmente inizia l’International Speech Contest ed io sono tesa come una corda di violino… essere uno dei giudici è sì un onore, ma anche una grossa responsabilità, ed io la sento tutta. Cerco quindi di rilassarmi e di cogliere ogni sfumatura, ma soprattutto cerco di divertirmi ed imparare qualcosa da questi oratori.
Mano a mano che i discorsi si susseguono noto che ogni discorso è un vero “capolavoro”, tutti molto belli, ben fatti, con argomenti molto interessanti e toccanti. Ogni discorso mi lascia qualcosa. A fare la differenza è, ovviamente, l’esposizione del discorso, lo stile dello speaker, l’utilizzo della voce, dei gesti… insomma il mio compito è veramente arduo. Cerco di fare del mio meglio e do a tutti un punteggio alto perché, onestamente, non riesco a trovare niente che non vada. C’è chi resta fermo e non fa un buon uso del body language, chi invece usa la voce in maniera straordinaria, così come l’espressione del viso. Chi parla in maniera pacata ma molto incisiva, chi invece lo fa in maniera molto più diretta, lasciando trasparire “rabbia”. Insomma, è un tripudio di emozioni che si susseguono per tutta la durata del Contest. Non posso però nascondere che due discorsi, anzi due speakers, mi hanno colpita più degli altri. Una è Lesley Stevenson con uno Speech sulla “rabbia” e su come indirizzarla nella maniera giusta, e l’altro è John Zimmer. Non lo nascondo… quando ho saputo che era tra i Contestants ho avuto un sussulto! Ho guardato molti dei suoi discorsi su internet, è stato per me in diverse occasioni fonte di ispirazione, insomma… non vedevo l’ora di ascoltare il suo Speech. E non mi ha delusa, anzi! Il suo Speech era fantastico, parlava dell’utilizzo delle parole, di come le parole siano importanti. E che dire dell’esposizione?? Perfetta! Uso della voce mirato, con pause al momento giusto; i gesti accompagnavano le sue parole e le sottolineavano nei momenti chiave del discorso. È inutile dire che ha vinto lui e non mi ha sorpresa affatto!

Nel pomeriggio abbiamo assistito anche all’Evaluation Contest ed anche in questo caso ho fatto il giudice. Anche qui, molto difficile dare un voto, tutti i Contestants erano bravissimi e molto abili nel dare il giusto feedback. In questo caso ha vinto Lesley Stevenson, che era arrivata seconda nell’International Speech Contes.

Durante la giornata si sono alternati i due Contest, due Workshops ( “Selling in the Brave New World” su come migliorare il nostro approccio come venditori e “Having Fun with Disaster” su come gestire situazioni in cui i nostri props non funzionano!), un light lunch ed altri momenti di socializzazione durante i quali è stato per noi un grande piacere incontrare e parlare con altri Toastmasters arrivati da tutta la Svizzera, nonché con la District Governor. Molti di loro erano al tempo stesso sorpresi ed entusiasti di vederci là e questa atmosfera di cordialità, tipica del Toastmasters, ci ha veramente caricati.

È stato per noi al tempo stesso un onore ed una buona palestra partecipare a questa Conferenza. Ci ha fatto capire l’importanza di ciò che stiamo facendo come Toastmasters ma anche quanto ancora possiamo e dobbiamo fare se vogliamo far parte di un progetto più grande e crescere sempre di più. Ci ha fatto capire che stiamo andando nella giusta direzione, ma che se vogliamo crescere dobbiamo impegnarci a fondo e credere nelle nostre possibilità. Una cosa fondamentale che ci ha fatto riflettere è come dare internazionalità al nostro, anzi ai nostri Club. Questa può essere una delle chiavi per crescere e progredire, fino ad arrivare a livelli più alti, fino a trovarci anche noi su un palco e competere con gli altri Speakers.

Questa esperienza ci ha arricchiti e siamo sicuri che ne faremo tesoro e che ci servirà anche per spronare i nostri Fellows Toastmasters. Potrà sembrare ormai uno slogan strausato ma credetemi…YES, WE CAN!
