Dr Mar­tin Luther King once said, “I have a dream”. Well, so do I. In my dream, I envi­sion our club sprou­ting into seve­ral more clubs to create an area with 4 or 5 clubs. I see this deve­lo­ping into a district with seve­ral areas. I pic­ture speech com­pe­ti­tions bet­ween clubs and areas that evolve top-rate spea­kers who can com­pete at the Inter­na­tio­nal level. I fore­see an oppor­tu­nity for Ita­lian speech enthu­siasts to stand before large and varied groups of like-minded toast­ma­sters in many dif­fe­rent venues around Italy wil­ling to listen with a kind ear, eva­luate with an astute mind and encou­rage with a gene­rous heart. But alas, I thought this was only a dream… until Satur­day April 17th, when I got a peek at our pos­si­ble future and now… I am inspi­red.
Laura Tavola, Laura Limi­tone and I got up with the roo­sters that fate­ful Satur­day mor­ning and embar­ked on, what became for us, a tho­rou­ghly sati­sfy­ing and moti­va­ting jour­ney. We atten­ded the Divi­sion E Annual Con­fe­rence held in the Four Points by She­ra­ton in Zurich, Swi­tzer­land. This fla­w­les­sly orga­ni­zed event (what else would you expect from the Swiss) wel­co­med mem­bers from clubs from all over Swi­tzer­land to come toge­ther and learn from each other through work­shops and speech com­pe­ti­tions.
I was astoun­ded by the sheer num­ber of par­ti­ci­pants and encou­ra­ged by the enthu­siasm, pas­sion and keen­ness these Toast­ma­sters displayed. When we arri­ved, we where warmly wel­co­med, brie­fed on the days acti­vi­ties and given our name tags. One by one, almost all in atten­dance approa­ched us with a friendly smile, intro­du­ced them­sel­ves and expres­sed their appre­cia­tion that we would tra­vel so far to be a part of their con­fe­rence. I imme­dia­tely felt at ease… wel­come… home.
We wit­nes­sed top rate spea­kers give phe­no­me­nal spee­ches with text­book tech­ni­que clearly honed through hours of prac­tice. But, what really struck me was the joy that oozed from these spea­kers as they shared their thoughts through words and com­ple­tely enga­ged the audience. We heard about the impor­tance of allo­wing trust to win over fear, using anger as an ally, a new, posi­tive way of loo­king at the word “Mafia”, how soup made a pro­found dif­fe­rence in someone’s life and the power of words, the­mes of some really great spee­ches that I hope we can share with all of you in an upco­ming mee­ting once we receive the DVD.
After the speech com­pe­ti­tion, we had the oppor­tu­nity to wit­ness an equally arti­cu­late group jud­ged on their skills in eva­lua­ting a speech. All con­te­stants really sho­wed how power­ful an eva­lua­tion can be to encou­rage, give con­fi­dence, and empo­wer a spea­ker to move for­ward and improve.
Fol­lo­wing a short lunch and social net­wor­king, we all set­tled into the after­noon work­shops. I atten­ded the work­shop by Jack Vin­cent about “Sel­ling in a Brave new World” and AK Bul­lus on what to do when props go wrong in your pre­sen­ta­tions. Jack sho­wed us how much more wor­th­while it is to truly listen to our clients and not just show them how “sexy” our product/service can be and AK invol­ved us all in coming up with solu­tions to real disa­sters that occur with props when we do a pre­sen­ta­tion. Both were very inte­re­sting, invol­ved the audience and left me with many new ideas to think about.
We left the con­fe­rence regret­ting only one thing… that we didn’t sign up for the din­ner and perhaps stay the night so that we could have more time with these won­der­ful peo­ple. I made many new friends and esta­bli­shed some great con­tacts for poten­tial future busi­ness col­la­bo­ra­tion. We drove home exu­ding an after-glow of sati­sfac­tion after having a taste of what it means to be a part of such a large, well orga­ni­zed, enthu­sia­stic, and pas­sio­nate group.
As I come back to our club, I feel much more like a part of a much lar­ger orga­nism and am deter­mi­ned to use the tools Toast­ma­sters Inter­na­tio­nal gives us to grow toge­ther with all of you, the Ita­lian Toast­ma­sters: a group that has already pro­ven to be great and that, I am con­vin­ced, has the poten­tial to take its place in the Inter­na­tio­nal arena to pro­duce world-class spea­kers.
I highly encou­rage all of you to par­ti­ci­pate in the upco­ming Fall con­fe­rence (date to-be-announced). I know I’ll be there and am happy to have any and all of you join me. I pro­mise you, you won’t come back the same.

Sono qui che cerco le parole per descri­vere l’esperienza che ho vis­suto pochi giorni fa, il 17 aprile, insieme ad altri due fan­ta­stici TM, Laura Tavola ed Andy Bar­biero! Ma comin­ciamo per gradi…

Qual­che set­ti­mana fa abbiamo rice­vuto l’invito da parte della Divi­sion E a par­te­ci­pare, come ospiti, alla loro Con­test Con­fe­rence a Zurigo! Con entu­sia­smo decido imme­dia­ta­mente che voglio far parte di quella “spe­di­zione”! Qual­che giorno prima dell’evento, con mia immensa sor­presa, mi viene anche richie­sto di essere uno dei 6 giu­dici che dovranno decre­tare il vin­ci­tore sia dell’Intenational Speech Con­test che dell’Evaluation Con­test. Un immenso onore, ed accetto la sfida con grande entusiasmo.

Il giorno della Con­fe­renza par­tiamo di buon’ora ed arri­viamo a Zurigo in tempo per la regi­stra­zione ed il brie­fing dei giu­dici. L’atmosfera è friz­zante e tutti sono molto cor­diali. Entriamo nella sala dove si ter­ranno i Con­test ed i work­shop e veniamo anche pre­sen­tati come “Ita­lian Dele­ga­tion” ed accolti da un calo­ro­sis­simo applauso.
Assi­stiamo prima di tutto ad uno Speech di Helen Her­mens, il District Gover­nor del District 59. un discorso molto inte­res­sante e molto moti­vante.
Poi final­mente ini­zia l’International Speech Con­test ed io sono tesa come una corda di vio­lino… essere uno dei giu­dici è sì un onore, ma anche una grossa respon­sa­bi­lità, ed io la sento tutta. Cerco quindi di rilas­sarmi e di cogliere ogni sfu­ma­tura, ma soprat­tutto cerco di diver­tirmi ed impa­rare qual­cosa da que­sti ora­tori.
Mano a mano che i discorsi si sus­se­guono noto che ogni discorso è un vero “capo­la­voro”, tutti molto belli, ben fatti, con argo­menti molto inte­res­santi e toc­canti. Ogni discorso mi lascia qual­cosa. A fare la dif­fe­renza è, ovvia­mente, l’esposizione del discorso, lo stile dello spea­ker, l’utilizzo della voce, dei gesti… insomma il mio com­pito è vera­mente arduo. Cerco di fare del mio meglio e do a tutti un pun­teg­gio alto per­ché, one­sta­mente, non rie­sco a tro­vare niente che non vada. C’è chi resta fermo e non fa un buon uso del body lan­guage, chi invece usa la voce in maniera straor­di­na­ria, così come l’espressione del viso. Chi parla in maniera pacata ma molto inci­siva, chi invece lo fa in maniera molto più diretta, lasciando tra­spa­rire “rab­bia”. Insomma, è un tri­pu­dio di emo­zioni che si sus­se­guono per tutta la durata del Con­test. Non posso però nascon­dere che due discorsi, anzi due spea­kers, mi hanno col­pita più degli altri. Una è Lesley Ste­ven­son con uno Speech sulla “rab­bia” e su come indi­riz­zarla nella maniera giu­sta, e l’altro è John Zim­mer. Non lo nascondo… quando ho saputo che era tra i Con­te­stants ho avuto un sus­sulto! Ho guar­dato molti dei suoi discorsi su inter­net, è stato per me in diverse occa­sioni fonte di ispi­ra­zione, insomma… non vedevo l’ora di ascol­tare il suo Speech. E non mi ha delusa, anzi! Il suo Speech era fan­ta­stico, par­lava dell’utilizzo delle parole, di come le parole siano impor­tanti. E che dire dell’esposizione?? Per­fetta! Uso della voce mirato, con pause al momento giu­sto; i gesti accom­pa­gna­vano le sue parole e le sot­to­li­nea­vano nei momenti chiave del discorso. È inu­tile dire che ha vinto lui e non mi ha sor­presa affatto!

“Scrivo a poche ore dalla mia par­te­ci­pa­zione al 9° incon­tro Toast­ma­sters tenu­tosi ieri presso lo IULM di Milano.

Mai par­te­ci­pa­zione è stata più casuale: ricevo un invito via Face­book dall’amico Prof. Mau­ri­zio Goetz, che ovvia­mente rin­gra­zio per l’opportunità.
Leggo al volo il tema Toast­ma­sters — Public Spea­king e lo inse­ri­sco nel mio calen­da­rio (mi dico magari curano la mia “logor­rea”).

Ieri sera arrivo lungo ma mi rendo conto che ho lo spa­zio per par­te­ci­parvi e ci vado.

Entro di con­se­guenza in ritardo nell’Aula Semi­nari e trovo una ricca pla­tea con un eccel­lente ora­tore che da ampio sfog­gio delle sue capacità.

In un atteg­gia­mento un po’ snob ascolto e intanto invio delle mail (reali urgenze figlie di tele­fo­nate rice­vute minuti prima).

L’evoluzione dell’evento prende il soprav­vento sulla mia atten­zione che ora è con­cen­trata sulla par­te­ci­pa­zione e al back-up con i miei imman­ca­bili appunti.

Non c’è nulla di uni­di­re­zio­nale, non c’è un atteg­gia­mento da didat­tica clas­sica: coin­vol­gono il pubblico.

vor­rei rin­gra­ziare per la gen­ti­lis­sima acco­glienza rice­vuta al Toast­ma­sters mee­ting di mar­tedi’ scorso.
Com­pli­menti per l’organizzazione, vera­mente enco­mia­bile (light and sound spe­cial effect were remar­ca­ble).
Spero che i miei impe­gni pre­senti mi per­met­te­ranno di ritor­nare pre­sto e magari par­te­ci­pare (in que­sto momento ho ancora un piede in Colo­rado).

Anche se era sol­tanto la nostra seconda visita… ci siamo sen­titi già a casa !!
